  • This course will review the fundamental aspects of ASC 815 (FAS 133) and guide participants through key concepts such as how to qualify for special accounting treatment, how to measure and document derivatives fair value and how to establish ASC 815-compliant hedge programs from inception through effectiveness testing and documentation. We will also share more nuanced interpretations of ASC 815, including insights into recent SEC and FASB pronouncements.

    • Four cornerstone concepts;
    • Eligibility requirements for derivatives and hedged items;
    • Fundamentals valuation concept: forward and option instruments;
    • ASC 820 (FAS 157) fair value measurement concepts and application;
    • Processes and approaches to identifying embedded derivatives;
    • Checklist of the unpublished and ever changing documentation "requirements";
    • Effectiveness testing concepts, with focus on the hypothetical derivative approach;
    • Overview of journal entry preparation approach;
    • Discussion of emergent FASB and SEC guidance and issues;
    • Brief overview of disclosure requirements.

    This course is designed for accounting, external reporting, and finance or treasury personnel at any level. At the completion of this class, participants will have a good understanding of the fundamental concepts of ASC 815. This course is a good introduction to key concepts in ASC 815 or a refresher to assist participants in understanding their company's documentation, effectiveness testing and journal entries associated with their ASC 815 hedge program. Participants will leave the training with an annotated workbook, a critical reference document for the future. This course focuses on concepts and theory, for additional hands on, debits and credits we recommend combining this class with ASC 815 Practical Applications offered in the afternoon.
